They are all of African descent and they all star in A.D. The Bible Continues with significant roles. Mary Magdalene is played by Chipo Chung, a Tanzanian-born actress; John “the Beloved” is played by Gambian Babou Ceesay; Denver Isaac is his brother John. TV producer Mark Burnett discussed the diverse casting at the District's 19th Street Baptist Church on February 6th. He expounded on their choice in front of a crowd of African American pastors and other church leaders. Burnett is the creator of successful shows like "Shark Tank" & "The Apprentice".
There are already some grumblings on the horizon possibly of Burnett attempting to take advantage of the financial windfall diversity can produce. Noting that sure, John is black, his brother of course, and one of the closest women to him, Mary Magdalene is also a woman of color. There's even a black man playing an angel for crying out loud, but Jesus, is still very much lily white... Or is he? At least this seems to be the feeling, but sometimes what we feel isn't always fact, as in all actuality Jesus is played by a very fair skinned Latino actor...COMING SOON
